RU Mailbag: The Conservative Conundrum in Alberta

Tags:

What an exciting day around Radio Underdog land. I got another email.

Dear Underdog:

As an Albertan who has traditionally voted Conservative, I’m intrigued by the recent Party leadership vote for Ed Stelmach. Do you think their support for him is wise? One the one hand, they’ve shown solidarity within the party, but on the other, most Albertans are displeased by the party’s dealings with the H1N1 issue, the Royalty Issue, etc. Could you discuss the conundrum they’re going through, whereby keeping the leader might mean losing the election, or losing the leader and opening themselves up to criticism, that being the cost of a potential victory? Or is there a third option which involves Albertans continuing to vote them in regardless of performance?

Thanks,
Old Blue.

Taking a Shot at Healthcare

TAGS: None

The beauty of this H1N1 vaccine fiasco is it pretty clearly illustrates why those of us calling for another tier of healthcare aren’t money grubbing capitalists with a “profits before people” mindset. Granted, many of us don’t mind the industry/market angle on medical practices. In the case of H1N1 vaccines however, we can point out the one huge flaw that ABSOLUTELY MUST BE REMEDIED but likely can’t be under the current system. ACCESS.

Calgary opened a scant few vaccination clinics and the demand was far greater than the supply of vaccine doses. At no time could one step out of line and go somewhere else. This was the only place. Your boss couldn’t protect his assets by ordering his own batch for willing employees. Your school board couldn’t protect its willing pupils by organizing its own clinics. You were told exactly how and exactly where you have to go to get it, regardless of how this impacts your life. God help us.

Maybe it’s because I’m so fucking MTV generation and I want everything now, but let me tell you something about getting shit done… governments generally do a shitty job because of something called bureaucracy. Flu shots should be no different than aspirin tablets which, I may point out, can be bought at 7-Eleven! Is this clear? People want flu shots. If these things are safe enough to allow into the country in the first place, why the massive procedure to get one? Open the door. Allow the market to work. Stop telling us to line up at the key hole.

Canada pisses me off. This is an easy one. But wait for it because it’s going to get worse. It’s going to become a political issue with both sides blaming the other. We deserve better, but we don’t demand it.

To be continued, I’m sure…
