New Thinker vs. Old Medium

EI A-OK: NDP

This is just awesome to me.  There’s some reason for concern going into a fall election if you’re the Tories.  They could lose ground.  I like to believe that they could score a huge win, but Harper ain’t exactly Obama in the hearts and minds of Canadians and he could easily stumble or, and I don’t mind giving credit, be outdone by Ignatieff.  Besides, Flaherty’s deficit announcement last week is a pretty easy wound to pick at.  The Liberals will say that if our deficit is going to be this bad, we may as well give the money to the broke and/or lazy.  That would win a lot of votes.

Jack Layton, in true self-important style, is playing himself as a factor in whether or not we go to the polls.  (Talk about having a lot to lose).  He’s been talking about the possibility of a deal with the Tories since Iggy decided to force Harper’s hand.  Now, in a move that seems quite compassionate, the Tories are making moves to reform EI and give added benefits to certain qualifiers and this might be enough to appease Layton and stave off another election.  Wow.  That’s awesome.  A man who has made his career out of vilifying and demonizing Stephen Harper now has enough to get into bed with him.  If Harper had known that Layton would so easily sell his soul, he could have been governing a Conservative “coalition” majority for years.

Is it any wonder why people are less and less interested in voting?  It’s not because we have too many elections.  It’s because these characters have no character.  Layton is a joke to this country.  He always has been.  I thought it was really cute when he was party leader and didn’t have a seat and would sit outside Parliament and comment on stuff.  That was adorable.  Iggy and Harper, I dunno.  I like one more than the other, but both of these men want the power of the office, not the magnanimous opportunity that comes with it.  It would be a treat if we could get a policy driven politician who wouldn’t make bold-faced bullshit pronouncements like “getting rid of poverty” or “eliminating the GST” just to snatch the reins.  (Reigns?)

I voted for Paul Hinman today.

The Fear of What We Don’t Know

I’m still only 50/50 on the likelihood of an election this November.  I’m not convinced the Bloc will support Iggy more than they will Harper. Afterall, Iggy spurned the BQ when he ripped up that accord that Bob Rae wants you to forget about.

In the event that we do go to the polls, Read the rest of this entry »
